Youth Workforce Office

 

The Youth Workforce Office at New Horizons Regional Education Centers offers an array of comprehensive sponsored services through its In-School and Out-of-School Programs for at-risk youths ages 16-24 on the Greater Peninsula. These services are federally funded under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) and assist youths in skills training, educational attainment and successful employment.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Youths between the ages of 16-24
  • Low income (Defined by current WIOA guidelines)

Barriers (Falls under one or more of the following):

  • Deficient in basic literacy skills
  • School Dropout
  • Homeless, Runaway Youth or Foster Child
  • Pregnant or Parenting Youth
  • Offender
  • An individual who requires additional assistance to complete an educational program or to secure and hold employment

Sponsored Services for In-School Programs

  • Academic remediation through summer school services
  • After school tutoring to include night school, driver’s education training and career awareness enrichment activities
  • Summer career development activities, including character and leadership development, career exploration, adult mentoring, job shadowing, and part-time job internships.
  • Work Experience activities, to include paid and unpaid during the school year and summer employment.
  • Skills Tutor – an online instructional tool that provide student assistant in core skills in additional to workplace readiness skills with the overall outcome of obtaining student achievement in these areas.

  • Occupational Skills Training
  • Career Readiness Certificate (CRC)
  • – Pre-Apprenticeship Electrical Training
  • – Certified Nursing Assistance
  • – Other Technical Training Programs
  • Transportation Assistance for certain programs
  • Childcare Assistance (Must first seek assistance from Social Services)
  • Employability/Soft Skills Training
  • Linkages to businesses and community agencies
  • Counseling services and referral to other community services
  • Skills Tutor
  • Specialized tools or uniforms as required in training programs
