Work Based Learning

 

Work Based Learning is a broad term used to describe a number of opportunities designed to provide students with real world experience in an occupation or industry they may be evaluating as a long-term career choice.  The following database search tool will provide you with access to the current opportunities by type and career cluster. Simply select the type of opportunity you are interested in and review the positions on the detailed list provided.  Should you find one or more opportunities of interest, please forward those interests to the Youth Career Cafe staff using the E-Form below. They will arrange all contact with the advertising employers.

Volunteering might not pay money, but it PAYS OFF!!

 

Volunteering in your community is another great way to start building up your work reputation and get good references.  It doesn’t pay money, but it pays off later because you’ll have work experience to talk about in your job interviews and you will gain good references to put on your job applications!

Volunteer work can be fun and it impresses employers!

  • America’s Promise: www.americaspromise.org . An organization to support and build upon existing youth organizations
  • Idealist: www.idealist.org  Houses a variety of tips for non-profit organizations, guides to on profits and more. A global site.
  • Corporation for National Community Service: nationalservice.org   The Web site for AmeriCorps. Senior Corps, and other programs which are domestic versions of the Peace Corps.
  • NetAid: www.netaid.org   Database of online volunteering opportunities.  Activities are focused on efforts to support organizations working in or for developing countries.  Managed by  the United Nations Volunteer Programme.
  • Points of Light Foundation: pointsoflight.org   The Points of Light Foundation has several documents that can help employee volunteer program managers.  Click on “corporate assistance” on the left navigational bar.
